Legendary band U2 rocked Dallas last night bringing in over 70,000 people to the brand new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. With fans showing up at 8am to get in line for the general admission seating you can just imagine what the crowd was like at show time. If any band was going to break in this brand new stadium, U2 sure was it!
I’d love to tell you all about the opening act, MUSE, but sadly I can’t. While I was supposedly all set to take pictures of MUSE, when I arrived no one seemed to know anything. This lead to a wild goose chase around the entire stadium – from top level to the tunnels beneath it – that lasted all the way through MUSE’s set. I had so been looking forward to seeing and shooting that band. Cowboy Stadium staff – you really need to get your acts together. It helps when people actually know what’s going on.
Thankfully things went as planned when it came to U2 though and I headed down onto the field to get ready to take my pictures. U2’s 360 stage is a thing to behold all on its own. The giant spaceship-like design covers not only the round stage but also a second ring catwalk and moveable bridges. Between the stage and catwalk were the best seats and the fans there were packed in tight and ready to rock.
While they didn’t play a lot of songs from the Rattle and Hum days they did play the ones most want to hear and there was plenty of their newer stuff as well. Kicking the night off with “Breath” they continued on with songs such as “Beautiful Day”, “No Line On The Horizon”, and “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight”. At one point during the show Bono bent down over the bridge that connected stage to catwalk and took the hand of a 15 year old boy and pulled him up. Hand in hand they walked the catwalk two or three times as Bono sang and Bono gave the young man a gift – the sunglasses that Bono was wearing. Talk about making a kid’s night!
With songs dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi, the elected Prime Minister of Burma and his work with children in Africa there was of course a bit of a political statement during the show but with all the good Bono’s done for so many organizations – even if political statements during concerts bothers you, these were well done and not ‘shoved down your throat’.
With a three hour set I don’t think anyone left feeling as if they’d missed something and my ears were still ringing this morning from the cheers. Whether you like U2 or don’t you can’t deny that they put on one hell of a show!
