Rick Springfield Live from Dickies Arena, Ft Worth, TX

The amazing part of concert photography is that for 3 songs, you’re “in the mix”. Usually in front of the artist watching through the glass. One tradition I still carry to this day is stop taking pics for a bit and simply enjoy the moment. Sing along, look back at the crowd and just be thankful you’ve gotten where you’ve always wanted to be. In this sense, it was the first time I’ve ever seen Rick Springfield live, and you’re damn straight i sang along with “I’ve Done Everything For You”.

While I’ve never seen Rick Springfield before, I must think that “back in the day” he would have been the same. There was high energy, vocals spot on, roses handed to Rick and Rick obliterating said roses on his guitar. In fact, the only difference would be that back in those days, he wouldn’t be celebrating his 74th birthday with us.

74 and still looks and sounds like everything I remember.

Anyway, I only get the first 3 songs and then we’re booted out of the pit. The booting I’m sure was appreciated by many front row fans as I am a bit tall and can block views. But the 2 songs I got to hear were Affair of the Heart, I Get Excited, Happy Birthday and I’ve Done Everything For You.

The roaring crowd behind me was not to be denied. From the ovation at his entrance

Now, not having been to a Springfield concert before, The roses were something I wasn’t expecting. All I saw was someone holding them up and Rick took them and got “that look” on his face. Next thing I knew there were rose petals everywhere and I’m sure several rows deep into the crowd. Since I do tend to watch through the camera, I still got some of these shots. However, I was more prepared when he took what was left when he did it again.

Other hits included his new song Automatic from his new release by the same name, Don’t Talk to Strangers and closing it out with Love Somebody and Jessies Girl. Full set list here.

It was a bad night to be a dozen roses to be sure. However, it was a fantastic night for me and the thousands at Dickies Arena. While can’t ever truly go back in time, seeing this show is about as close as you can get. Rick still looks and sounds amazing. This tour should definitely be on your list of “can’t miss” shows as we head into the fall. Tour schedule here.

Some input from a few in the audience for the whole show –

Heather Lee Cody:
Tommy TuTone started the night & did a great cover of one of my favorites, Croce’s Operator…
Paul Young did a few cuts, some I did not recognize, & finished strong with his ballad Everytime You Go…
The Hooters came out strong & blew it up with every cut – pleasant surprise!

Finally, what can I say about Rick Springfield but holy shit y’all! He’ll be 74 this week but still rocks just as hard as he did back in the day, if not even more so! Yes I said 74!!!!!

Rick will always be a favorite live & on studio tracks because he continues to evolve while staying true to his core values & musical roots! Check out his latest release Automatic
