Icepicks for August - Ingram Hill

ingram-hill-look-your-best-album-cover1
When making a playlist there’s a lot of things I think about; how well known is the song or band, does it fit the style/mood I’m after for the show itself and so forth. Some bands I pick up and while they may mean a lot at the time, in time I forget to play them. First for a few weeks, then months and then I just remember them while driving home and think DAMN IT – load up some of xyz bands music and listen to it again. But I don’t. I may or may not remember it much after that and if I spent a lot of time thinking about it I’ll slip into depression cause at the time I really did love that musi...

Linkin Park / Chester Bennington - Hybrid Theory 17 Years Later

chester
Chester Bennington unfortunately passed away on 7/20/17. His death has had a very strange effect on me, personally. I’m not a fan, nor have I really been a fan of Linkin Park’s music. Hell, I can honestly tell you, had you asked me prior to 4 days ago, I’d really only be able to tell you that Linkin Park is a band that came out during the age of nu-metal and they did some stuff with Jay-Z at some point. Needless to say, I wasn’t all too familiar. On the day he passed, I opened Facebook to a barrage of posts from heartbroken fans sharing their stories about how Chester and his music had touched...

icepicks for July - Colossal Street Jam, Living Free

CSJ
At times you never know where your next favorite song is coming from. In the 80s it was easy as the “machine” fed you hit after hit in at times an assembly line fashion. However, one thing for sure is in that time you heard a LOT of styles of music. You heard southern, corporate, glam, pop, alternative, metal, blues, and the list went on and on. But some bands stood out on their own for how well they did their sound. Colossal Street Jam has a recognizable sound all their own that they in fact do VERY well. With a Black Crows kinda vibe taken deeper than the Crows ever did, their 2016...

Icepicks for June - Bad Moon Born

badmoonborn
The good thing about working with a lot of passionate people in this business is people get to know what you like and usually even why. So when the twisted one slides me a "you'll dig this" I tend to pay attention. Recently he introduced me to another Australian band called Bad Moon Born  and their EP Chemical Lullabies . Holy hell this was a "hold the presses" moment as I copied the music to our server and got them into the rotation that very day. Let me explain, this is rare for me. I collect music and about once a month I'll get the new music out there and sure, I'm glad to break my st...

JIBE - Epic Tales of Human Nature

JIBE
This is tough one for me. When I first started Renegade Radio, everything was new and everyone was “the next big thing”. We spent a few years kinda watching the scene and learning all we could about the best local talent and who the ones “on the verge” were.  11 years ago that was JIBE . If you were in a band the last thing you wanted at this time was to have to play a local show the same night they did cause almost everyone went to JIBE. Hell you probably wanted to go see them too. But again, that was 11 years ago. I’ve changed since then. Certainly the band has or they’d not be bac...

Doyle II - As We Die

doyle-aswedie
For the handful of you out there who may be unfamiliar, Doyle got his start as the guitarist for the Misfits almost 40 years ago. Where many punk artists from that era are finding comfort in new sounds (some for better, some for worse), Doyle has been charging on with a surprising amount of consistency since day one, be it on later Misfits releases, other projects with Danzig post-Misfits, or solo. If it’s got Doyle’s name attached to it, it’s almost guaranteed to evoke something rather nasty in your mind. On “Doyle II: As We Die,” Doyle teams up with Alex Story, the insanely talented frontman...

icepicks for may - thrilldriver

thrilldriver
While we do have a submissions folder for new music, our recent shift to more nationals coupled with the flood of country, hip hop, rap, and at times what amounts to drunk old men on an older acoustic guitar singing to you in your facebook e-mail, I’ve been thinking maybe it’s time to move away from this and find another way find new music. At this point I believe we’re up to 7gb of “music” that scares me more than entertains. You have to wonder if the people who bother to find our submissions address even bother to listen to see what we play and if they’re a match. Then one day you are sent s...

Icepicks for April - Abacu5

abacu_20170429-231925_1
Abacu5 out of Dallas has been playing the local scene for many years. They also have the distinction of being able to tour in China after being selected as the guest artist for the Shanghia American School playing several live music venues through the area. This month they release their first full length cd, A Long Way to Begin and the sound is a fantastic mix of rock, soulful melodies, and a wide range of sound that simply won't allow the band to be easily classified. Geared more for a thoughtful audience you can certainly turn off the world and tune into some great music. We kick off with Bl...
